Spatial organisation of designs 1,2&3

Sections & elevations concepts 2(top) & concept 1(bottom)
spatial sketch of concept 4. where lift shaft drops from surface to floating floor with the 12 units of space pulled out of the sphere forming corridors/roots, leaving a void in the sphere. Which I think created a powerful space the client gets to one unit to another through this centralised sphere room.

Submission hand-in EQUUS

For my design I started thinking about the
organisation of the units, since the client
was neat and clean.
This led me to the spliting of the units into
three zones:
-1 the Living and Kitchen area
-2 Sleeping and Bathing area
-3 with the study area being the most important
unit in the clients brief
These three units revolved around a tower
like shape which in itself was made out of a
reflective material; which in my case is steel.
To me this suited my client better as he is a workaholic in the field of the ‘cold sciences’.
 Concept 1
After a few varying designs with the tower and the
3 zones I came up with this. With the 3 zones
separated into three 3 floors, with zone 1 on the first,
zone 2 on the second and zone 3 on the top floor. In
the top floor of the tower the ceiling and walls are
cladded in steel. I thought this allowed the highly
commercial sort of space to be a place of reflection
and thinking.

   Concept 2
This was just concept 1 but inverted; which
led to the idea of an underground laboratory.
With a steel metal element which encases a
ladder shaft in which you descend into deeper
floors. The 3 zones were also inverted, IE The
study/lab are on the bottom floor. This pushed my
design concept for my client to revolve more around
the study and reflected space, since the importance of
deeper thinking became an important part of my characters
brief. The buildings alos had sky lights which allowed
ambient light to enter the space making it feel purer, cleaner, like
a sanctuary for for character.

Concept 3
Moving onto the digital models, 3ds max allowed me to design
more organic shapes, creating a double helix shape of the tower;
which was derived from my first concept, with the three zones made
out of concrete and glass and the helixes being the steel reflective
element.

 Concept 4
The Geneticist, this profession can be considered morally wrong, since we
are heading into the direction of artificially creating things; which before could
only be left up to mother nature to decide. An extreme case of this is how ears
were grown out of the backs of mice. This idea drove my building shape
to be more like a cancerous root pervasively intruding into mother earth. With
the units becoming large facilities pulled out from inside the building into the
long corridors/roots; which don’t have any respect in terms of relating to the
site and landscape.

Short Story

A geneticist is a biologist who studies genetics, the science of genes, heredity, and variation of organisms.

Story starts......

Geneticist guy is looking through his microscope.

A hand rests on his shoulder, ‘You should head home and get some rest.’
‘Yes Colleague man I will, as soon as I’m finished.’ Geneticist guy yawns, rubs his tired eyes and watches Colleague man leave.

He continues to work for 10 minutes… then 30… Now 2 hours later geneticist gets up dusts himself and heads home, leaving his pristine white lab coat in his locker.
On his drive home he organises his thoughts. What needed to be done around the house. Laundry Lady will come tomorrow so had to make sure all the dirty clothes are in the laundry. Order some take-out for dinner and check whether Cleaning Lady did a proper job. He quickly runs through his mental check list. Then once more before he let his mind idle, thinking about work.

He orders his usual from Take-out guy. 40 minutes later, Take-out guy arrives and Geneticist guy starts eating.

While eating his take-out he remembers a conversation he had with Colleague man, about how he needed a woman in his life instead of obsessing over his work, about how there is more to life than seeing a thousand times magnified through a lens. He remembers replying, ‘I take pride in my work. I keep everything organised and orderly. I can’t have a woman come in and start messing with things.’ This memory led to another.

Geneticist guy had recently started dating a girl from his second year genealogy course lectures. They went on a lot of dates during the semester, more often than not, Girlfriend was always late. Geneticist didn’t mind much at the start, they had a lot of fun together. Later on they started living together. Geneticist guy was surprised that Girlfriend had a very unorganised and untidy sort of lifestyle. Other differences eventually came up; which led to arguments; which then led to their break up. Girlfriend and Geneticist guy are still good friends but nothing more.

Geneticist guy finishes his take-out, straightens out a stack of magazines on the table and gets ready for bed.
True Geneticist guy does feel a little lonely thinking about the past, but he was very content with his life right now. His work was his life and Geneticist guy does his utmost in his research, researching ways to fix hereditary diseases, advancing the fields of genealogy and science.

Geneticist guy thinks contently, ’Yes I’m my making mark in the world, I’ll definitely be remembered. Remembered as a person who had great contributions to science.’ Yes as Geneticist guy laid there running through his mental check list thinking about his next day he was very content, wondering about all the new things he might discover.
